Prozac Information

Prozac (fluoxetine) is manufactured and marketed by Eli Lilly the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Prozac in 1988  for the treatment of depression and later, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Bulimia and Panic Disorder.  It is classified as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant.  SSRI medications are widely prescribed and are used more than any other drug for the treatment of depression in the U.S.  Other SSRI medications include Celexa, Lexapro and Zoloft, among others.

Irving Kirsh told 60 Minutes that the difference between the perceived benefit of a placebo compared with that of an antidepressant is minimal for most.

Nearly two decades after its initial approval, the FDA issued an alert declaring that, when taken during pregnancy, SSRI antidepressants like Prozac increase the risk of giving birth to an infant with persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN), a life threatening disorder. The FDA also initially classified Prozac and other SSRI antidepressants as a pregnancy “category C” medication, meaning that animal reproduction studies have indicated elevated risk of adverse effects on the animal fetus.

Through our litigation and consultation with medical experts, we are establishing the link between Prozac and serious congenital defects.
